The first thing you need to decide when measuring for roman blinds is whether you want the blind to be inside the recess or outside. Which you choose depends mostly upon personal taste but there are other factors that you should think about.
Is there enough space for the blind outside the recess? How much light do you want to block out? Do you still want to see the sill once the blind is down? We are more than happy to talk through these decisions with you if you would like a professional opinion.
Tips for measuring roman blinds:
- For accuracy we advise that you use a metal measuring tape.
- Always double check your measurements.

INSIDE RECESS
Width:
Measure the width in several places, especially at the very top and bottom.
Note the narrowest measurement of the recess. Reduce this figure by 1cms and this is your finished blind width.
Drop:
Measure the drop in several places, especially the outside edges.
Note the shortest measurement.
This recess figure is your finished blind drop.
OUTSIDE RECESS
Width:
Check for obstructions and decide how much you would like the fabric to overlap the recess edges (minimum of 5cms each side is recommended).
Measure and note the decided width. This figure is your finished blind width.
Drop:
Check for obstructions and decide where you would like the top and bottom of the blind to start and finish (10-15cms above the recess and a minimum of 5cms below the recess are a good guide).
Measure and note the decided drop. This figure is your finished blind drop.
