Our humble beginnings...
I always envied my grandmother and her ability to need very little sleep. Every day she would be up by five o’clock and her first job was to remove caterpillars and unsuspecting bugs from her beloved plants before making a large pot of tea. The next daily task was to sit by the window at her old Singer machine and catch up on the latest sewing projects. One of my very first memories is sitting quietly next to her, just watching as her fingers skilfully made costumes, curtains and many other master pieces.
My grandmother lived with my great-grandmother and they both taught me to sew, crochet and knit with cross-stitch being my favourite. Little did I know these precious skills would help me later in life to build an exciting business!
In 1997, my first child was born. I left my job in the city, had two more children and was working full time bringing them up. In 2005, we moved to beautiful Suffolk and it was here I decided to start my soft furnishing business.
I enrolled on a specialist course for hand sewn, made to measure soft furnishings and began to perfect my craft. At worst, once training was complete, I would be able to make my own curtains!
I loved and thrived on the skilful sewing and attention to detail required for producing high quality items. I started advertising locally and began work on a trickle of small jobs and projects. It was incredibly daunting to make full size curtains and blinds when I had only trained on mini ones. Amazingly, my customers were very happy with the results, complimenting my sewing and recommending me to their friends. My confidence grew and my little business was becoming a success.
I continued to expand, focusing on people who really cared about using beautiful fabrics and the quality of their soft furnishings. It was really exciting meeting so many incredible people who shared my values and appreciated what I was doing. Living in Suffolk meant that many of my clients had the most wonderful country homes which ensured the work was interesting and often very challenging.
Several years later, Natalie Canning is renowned for designing and creating exquisite, luxury soft furnishings using only the highest quality fabrics. We have built a solid reputation for specialising in country homes and working with their unusual shape and size windows.
Our clients can always expect to initially spend time with me, sharing their ideas and inspirations. My knowledge and understanding helps gently guide them to the very best decisions. Our talented and close-knit team of seamstresses will work to exacting standards and create the beautiful, long lasting results we insist on. Our clients experience our care and attention to detail and feel the difference every time they open their unique curtains or blinds. What an absolute pleasure for all!
